I first met Sam when we were both at Bradford University in the mid 1970's. An early memory I have of Sam is watching a lot of the 1976 Olympic games with him on TV as we were both interested in and enjoyed many sports. The only event he refused to watch was boxing, which he hated because he couldn't stand the thought of a sport where the aim was to hurt another person. Says a lot about his attitude and beliefs both then and throughout his life. Like Sam I've always been a keen chess player and have enjoyed playing on the South Bradford team with him over the last few years, and we particularly enjoyed winning the 2nd division championship last year. My most enjoyable memories of Sam though are on the tennis court. Over the last few years we played doubles every week along with Dave and Hoss. Sam was always the most competitive of us and keen to win, but also scrupulously fair and would always give the benefit of the doubt on close line calls to his opponents. Sam was always positive and friendly as well as competitive, he usually had a good word to say to most people and would go out of his way to give anyone help if they needed it - I will miss you Sam!
