Valley View School: Our school’s first encounter with Sam was just over 4 years ago. He was our new chess teacher. I remember that I was instantly touched by his passion and enthusiasm for his work- his desire to ensure that every child he taught had a good and enjoyable experience of chess no matter how skillful they were. Sam was an instant hit with the children and staff alike. And I think was feeling was mutual. He provided wise words of wisdom to teachers and staff as to what chess challenge we should next take part in and Sam frequently told me how much he loved working at our school. He was an excellent chess tutor yet he was also humble. I’m unsure if he ever realised that to many children being taught to play chess is one of the highlights of their primary school journey. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him- he often came in far too early to check that the chess pieces were organised, sorted and ready for the children to play with, he would stay and play chess with small groups of children or provide a little extra coaching if there was a tournament coming up. He also came in on days that he was not meant to “referee” matches with other local schools. Sam will be very deeply missed by all at Valley View and our thoughts and love go out to his family.
