We are very grateful for Sam's friendship and encouragement. He turned up on our doorstep sometimes with fresh produce (fruit or veg) from his allotment - very tasty always! He was a cheery presence - gruff and cheery at the same time - around the Heaton community. He introduced our children, Callum and Rachel, to chess (no surprises there!) and that filled some fun evenings for them with him babysitting, which enabled us to get out. The whale (hedge trimmed into the shape of a whale) outside his house constantly brought a smile to us, and probably to many, walking or driving past it. We miss you.
