I loved having Sam as a brother-in-law - he brought a loud, interesting, intellectual and slightly unpredictable aspect to any family event. He made me laugh a lot. I was curious at times about his parenting style, and quite marvelled at it! I enjoyed his pride in and love of Ruby and Chester. The last couple of occasions spent with Sam were on December 21st in hospital, where he held Ruby’s hand for the whole two+ hours Billy and I were there, and was busy sorting practical things out with Pippa and chatting to friends. On Boxing Day all 4 children and I spent the afternoon with him, which I’ll remember for a very long time. He was on really good form - funny and happy. Mainly we talked about music, from the hippy days through the 60s, 70s to punk, ska, northern soul…it was all there. After an hour or so, I asked if we were wearing him out but he said, in his whispering, breathy voice by then but nevertheless quite emphatically, “No, I’m absolutely loving it! You’re all literally keeping me alive.” Sam, you’ll always be remembered with warmth and a smile. The world has lost a generous, kind, witty, fascinating, intelligent, very lovely man.
